Conversation with the Chamber 6/27/16
Summer Traffic Closure Pilot Program Discussion
The Chamber of Commerce is well aware of the summer traffic concerns that for years has affected our downtown business corridor. The Town's Traffic Closure Pilot Program to alleviate this pressure will begin Saturday, June 25th-26th. As you have probably read, the Town will close the on ramp to Hwy 17 at Wood Road beginning at 9 am until 3 p.m. The Northbound Hwy 17 ramp will remain open.At this point the Town plans to implement this pilot program two additional weekends, July 2 -4th and July 9th -10th in order to accurately assess traffic patterns on holiday versus non-holiday weekends. At the Council Meeting on June 7th, Chamber executives made a point of reminding the Council members to consider the local business community before shutting down this main thoroughfare, but the Council voted unanimously for this pilot closure, stressing they needed to try something. They agreed to do positive messaging about the situation and encourage people to visit our downtown. Electronic signs will provide notice well in advance of the closure location and the effected weekend. The Council also encouraged the Chamber of Commerce to help measure the success or failure of this pilot program by connecting with the business community and collecting our reactions.Date and Time
